Jewish pupils from across Manchester have been donating their birthday presents as part of The Big Birthday Appeal’s Great Gift Giveaway.  The initiative, now in its second year, encourages kids to give up one of their birthday gifts so that they can be passed on to children in need.

This month, Big Birthday committee member Lee Oehley delivered dozens of brand new toys to Manchester-based Saheli Asian Women’s Project.  Saheli provides a wide range of support services to Asian women and their children who have left their homes due to domestic violence.  The women are offered support, accommodation, security and counselling to improve their wellbeing and enable them to have better life chances for themselves and their families.

The toys were gratefully received by Saheli. A spokeswoman said: “We are so thankful to Big Birthday for delivering all these toys to Saheli. The children we help here leave everything behind them, which is tremendously difficult for them.  To receive a special gift makes an enormous difference to them and is such a boost. A big thank you to all the children who gave up one of their presents so that others could benefit.”

Another batch of toys, donated by pupils at Bury and Whitefield Jewish Primary School, were dropped off at The Fed by Big Birthday member Shelley Kersh, to be distributed to local Jewish children with special needs as part of Project Smile.

Judith Moryoussef, co-founder of the Big Birthday Appeal, said:  “The Big Birthday Appeal’s ethos has always been about educating children from a young age to get involved with helping those less fortunate.  The Great Gift Giveaway is a prime example of this – focusing around the time of their birthdays, when they’re often inundated with gifts.  We are so proud that so many kids have generously opted to give up one of their presents, and we’re delighted to have brought a smile to children who experience little joy in their lives.”

Big Birthday has previously donated birthday gifts to children helped by The Women’s Centre, based in Stockport, for families suffering domestic abuse.
