For the eighth year running, funds raised by the Big Birthday Appeal have sent local Jewish children with special needs on a holiday to North Wales.

Big Birthday covered the entire cost of the recent four-day break to Llandudno for a group of 19 children, organised by The Fed’s Project Smile.  The trip provided parents with much-needed respite and time to spend with other members of their families.

Carol Moffatt, Project Smile manager at The Fed, said: “The children’s holiday this year was absolutely brilliant. We took 19 children with a whole range of disabilities to North Wales.  Three of them had such a high level of need that they had to have two members of staff with them at all times.

“We ran a jam-packed, four- day programme with so many trips and treats: a tram-ride up the Great Orme, tobogganing, an outing to an adventure park, canoeing and loads of arts and crafts. They had the time of their lives! But, more than that, it gave them so many new experiences and a chance to build confidence and independence, make friends and generally do things that other children take for granted but which these children can only do with the right support.

“The feedback from their parents was exceptional. What came over was how much they valued the break and being able to completely switch off, knowing their children were happy and being well looked after.

“But none of this would be possible without the generosity of the Big Birthday Appeal and our superb Project Smile staff.”

Suzy Glaskie, co-founder of the Big Birthday Appeal, said: “We’re over the moon that Big Birthday has enabled children with special needs to benefit from another unforgettable holiday, organised by the wonderful Project Smile, and experience the sorts of activities that most kids take for granted.”
